How to Grow Spiritually in Difficult Seasons: Finding Roots in the Storm

When life breaks open—through loss, confusion, illness, or disappointment—growing spiritually may feel like a distant hope. Our prayers feel unanswered, God's nearness seems hidden, and faith becomes a whisper. But the truth found in Scripture is this: God does some of His deepest work in the darkest places. The valley isn't a dead end; it’s sacred ground where roots go deep and grace takes hold.

1. Be Honest with God

The Struggle:
We often hide our pain, thinking doubt or frustration makes us weak or faithless.

Scripture Says:

“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” – Psalm 13:1

Even David cried out in anguish, yet he kept turning toward God. Vulnerability in prayer isn’t rebellion—it’s real relationship.

Try This:
Let your prayers be raw and honest. Write out your frustrations, cry if you need to, or sit in silence. God welcomes your authenticity.

2. Stay Faithful in Small Ways

The Struggle:
When faith feels fragile, even opening your Bible or praying can feel too hard.

Scripture Says:
In 1 Kings 19, Elijah fled in fear and wanted to give up—but God met him with bread and rest. No grand miracles, just quiet sustenance.

Try This:

  • Whisper, “Jesus, help me.”

  • Read one verse, not a chapter.

  • Light a candle and invite God into your day.
Small steps still move you forward.

3. Let the Pain Shape You, Not Define You

The Struggle:
Hard seasons can start to feel like your entire identity.

Scripture Says:

“Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” – Romans 5:3–4

You’re not what happened to you. You’re who God is shaping through it.

Try This:
Ask, “Lord, what are You growing in me through this?” Write down even one small way you've grown stronger or more compassionate.

4. Don’t Go Through It Alone

The Struggle:
Pain isolates. We convince ourselves no one understands.

Scripture Says:
When Moses grew weary, his friends held his arms up (Exodus 17:12). You were never meant to endure alone.

Try This:
Reach out to someone you trust and simply say, “Can you pray for me?” Let community carry you when you can’t walk alone.

5. Remember What God Has Done Before

The Struggle:
Pain shouts louder than memory, and we forget the times God came through.

Scripture Says:
Joshua built altars to remind Israel of God’s faithfulness (Joshua 4:1–7).

Try This:
Write down three moments where God showed up for you in the past. Revisit them. Say them out loud. Memory rekindles faith.

Even the Wilderness Has a Purpose

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up... I am making a way in the wilderness.” – Isaiah 43:19

God may be silent, but He is never absent. In your desert, He is carving streams. In your waiting, He is working. Your suffering is not wasted—it’s the soil where transformation begins.

Closing Prayer

God, when I can't see the way ahead,
help me to trust that You are still near.
Teach me to walk by faith when feelings fade.
Grow deep roots in me that hold fast in every storm.
Thank You for being the God who works even in the shadows.
Amen.

  • Hard seasons are holy ground.
